Synopsis
The 'Third Area', the feature that CHOI Moo-Ryong directed and starred in himself, won the Best Scenario Award for Anti-communism Feature at the 7th Daejong Film Festival. Needless to say it's quite anti-communist. From the very beginning, it shows an obvious red complex. The title 'The Third Area' appears on a red screen giving a strong impression of saying something like 'Down with communism!'.Two Korean brothers live with their elderly mother in Japan. The younger brother(CHOI Moo-Ryong) is an intelligent Tokyo university student, and the elder(PARK No-Sik) is a rebel who, as a member of the Chochongneon (Pro-Pyongyang federation), tries to kill the adviser of The Association of Korean Residents in Japan. He is controlled by a beautiful spy (JUNG Hye-Sun) with dark sunglasses and a red skirt. It turns out that the adviser is a North Korean spy as well. After failing to kill him, Chochongneon kidnaps the brothers' elderly mother. The younger risks his own life to save his mother and ends up getting rid of the Chochongneon communists as a son of South Korea, the country of freedom. It is a stale, old-fashioned set up with an angel-like South Koreanand an evil gangster North Korean. But the cafe scene, with CHOI Mu-Ryogsinging, still makes us feel his passion as a romantic actor and a talented singer.
