The Grindhouse Revisited

Toolbox Murders

Dennis DONNELLY

USA1978 93min 35mm Color Korean Premiere

Synopsis

A ski-masked mania kills apartment complex tenants. He murders only female tenants with a toolbox filled with screw drivers and hammers. The tenants are helplessly killed without plans to stop the killing. After the killer attempts another murder but fails to kill a girl named Lory, he kidnapped the girl and her brother Joy is searching for his sister. Based around Grindhouse, B horror movies which enjoyed the golden age in the 1970's are differentiated from the current gory horror movies. Just like B-level slasher movies, Toolbox Murders doesn't give kind narratives to explain the psychological motives or developments but focuses only on maximizing th horrors of the murder itself. The first 15 minutes of the movie shows murder scenes with all the tools flying around is the representative sequence of B horror movies that maximizes the sensation of a slasher movie. The movie is best known for the notorious scene where the killer shoots the naked red-headed Marianne WALTER with a nailgun, which is the perfectly low-grade homage to Psycho. (Jin PARK)

Diretor

Dennis DONNELLY

Primarily at home in the world of television production, Dennis DONNELLY brought the world only one exploitation feature. Toolbox Murders is an undeniable drive-in classic, and one wishes that DONNELLY would have expanded further into the genre.
