Program Note

In a hunting ground, a bird is found dead. Gamekeeper Abel searches for the in truder on his land. He finds a strange creature in the woods and shoots it without hesitation. But when he goes home, he finds it difficult to shake off thoughts about the creature he killed, and the relationship with his already estranged wife completely falls apart after a minor tiff. The Thing That Ate the Birds is about an odd journey into dark and violent fantasy.

Sophie Mair and Dan Gitsham are partners in life and film. They have been creatively collaborating since 2007 in the world of genre. Their first short film Ella(2010) was invited to BIFAN. From 2011 to 2014, they developed Ella to the feature screenplay. After a life hiatus, they came back with And the Baby Screamed in 2018, which screened at festivals including Encounters and London Short Film Fest. At the beginning of 2019 they made a self-funded short Bill. They are now in development with a feature entitled Ginger
