Program Note

Anne, a gay porn director, is frustrated by the faded love of her boyfriend Lois, an editor and companion. She is inspired by the death of a porn star by a series of mysterious murders, and makes a controversial film.

Program Note

Anne, a producer of gay porn is heart-broken when her editor Lois has ended their romantic relationship. A masked killer seduces pretty gays and brutally murders them with a dildo. While actors in her project are killed one by one, Anne gets some inspiration and starts making a controversial film, Homo Cidal. Will Anne turn Lois’s cold heart back? The film is mixed with non-mainstream elements such as camp aesthetic, slasher, giallo from the 1970s. It has an appealing soundtrack created by M83 whose leader is Antoni Gonzalez, the director’s brother. The film was selected in the 2018 Cannes competition, and received mixed reviews from critics due to the slack direction for a thriller and the performance of Vanessa Paradis. Still, the film is quite original for its use of 35mm camera, its own aesthetics of high-quality trash, and Homo Cidal, a film within a film. (Ellen Y.D. KIM)
