He was born in 1946 and grew up in Baltimore in the 1950s.He was obsessed with violence and gore. He made silent 8mm and 16mm films in the mid-60s and screened in rented Baltimore church halls. He received the Grand Jury Prize at 1988 Sundance Film Festival for Hairspray (1988).
